The saddest news that lovely Tony Husband died suddenly on Westminster Bridge on October 18th. When I came to him with the idea of a little book to help people to get singing he was totally up for it. I remember seeing him at the Groucho Club and showing him tongue exercises! It was both funny and wonderful that he would be so happy just to give everything a go. I remember also seeing him when he was thinking about making a book about his experience with his dad’s dementia. Naturally, like everyone else with whom he must have discussed the idea, I couldn’t think of anything better. Once he drew me a cartoon which I now have framed at home. I marvelled at the speed with which he drew it. “Well, it’s taken me at least 25 years to be able to do that.” It’s so easy to forget that real skill and human understanding – as well as never ending wit – go into the making of a great cartoonist. And Tony was a really great one.
